In 1978, a humble venture called Vinylmaster (Manchester) emerged, specializing in the meticulous art of repairing damaged vinyl covers and re-upholstering furniture. Our craft involved the delicate work of re-welding and color-matching, transforming cuts and tears into invisible repairs. It was a skill that caught the attention of dentists, who often sought our expertise to mend the puncture holes caused by stiletto heels and belt buckles on dental chair seat cushions.
A Shift in Focus
The dedication to invisible repairs was an endeavor close to our hearts. We believed in preserving the integrity of vinyl covers before damages worsened. However, the rising costs associated with this art eventually led us to make a pivotal decision: to shift our focus towards providing re-upholstery services to the dental profession.
The Road to Success
This choice proved successful beyond our expectations. Word spread about our unwavering commitment to top-quality workmanship and fair pricing. Dentists and equipment suppliers entrusted us with their needs, and our reputation flourished.
Introducing Dental Stools
Amid our journey, an opportunity emerged. Tom Marsden, one of our company's founders with two decades of experience in electronic and instrumentation manufacturing, recognized a need within the dental industry. Drawing on his expertise, he designed our first DS1 Dental Stool.
A Milestone in Dental Seating
Ron Peters, the Northwest Manager of Castellini, validated our vision. He took a prototype DS1 for evaluation in March 1983 and shortly thereafter placed our first order—for 100 stools. The DS range of stools soon became a staple in dental practices and hospitals throughout the UK, evolving and upgrading over the years into our DS5 model.
The Transition to Vinylmasters Ltd
In 2003, we embraced change, altering our company name to Vinylmasters Ltd to align with favorable government legislation. Our interactions with practicing dentists unveiled a common occupational hazard—bad back pains. Postural challenges that arise after years of leaning forward during work led to the creation of our MDP stool.
The MDP Stool: A Superior Solution
Collaborating with an associate dentist in Manchester and a friend with back issues due to lifting heavy weights, we designed a dental stool we're incredibly proud of—the MDP stool. It boasts a superior back support, addressing a critical need within the profession.
Expanding the Product Range: DSW Range
In 1995, we introduced the DSW range, partnering with Takara Belmont (UK) Ltd to develop cost-effective dental stools that matched high-quality standards. The Belmont IC range of dental stools became a fixture in dental surgeries and hospitals.
Quality That Endures
The hallmark of Vinylmaster dental stools is their enduring quality. Stools that were dispatched over two decades ago still find their way back to us for re-upholstering. While the vinyl covers show signs of wear, the foam remains in remarkably good condition. This longevity is a testament to our meticulous foam selection and craftsmanship.

A New Chapter
On December 1, 2021, Tom Marsden, who played an instrumental role in our journey since 1978, stepped down from the company. His dedication will be dearly missed. Today, Stewart Hall, one of our two company directors, brings over 18 years of experience in manufacturing dental stools and reupholstering dental chairs. Leejay Hall, Stewart's son, at the age of 26, serves as a company director, ensuring the legacy and commitment to excellence continue.
